Fall 2009 Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" $49 or free*

In the fall of 2009, we are running a Darwin phone-based reading group for those who would like the Reading Odyssey reading experience of this great scientific work. Special thanks to Reading Odyssey sponsors Citrix Online and their HiDefConferencing division.

The reading group will meet Tuesdays Oct 6, Nov 3 and Dec 8 at 8pm ET, 5pm Pacific via phone. The conference call number will be supplied to all who register.

Edition? We'll read the Harvard University Press Fascimile of Darwin's first edition with introduction by the great Ernst Mayr. Here's the Amazon link.

Moderator? Stephanie Aktipis, Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology from the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard. Stephanie also holds a M.Sc. with honors in Science Policy from the London School of Economics where she studied the intersection of science, government, and public policy.   She has taught several biology courses at Harvard University and The George Washington University and received the Derek Bok Award for Excellence in Teaching at Harvard in 2004.  Most recently, Stephanie was a Teaching Fellow for the Evolutionary Biology course at Harvard College which included an in-depth study of The Origin of Species.  She currently serves as a Resident Tutor and Sophomore Advising Coordinator in Harvard College at Cabot House, an undergraduate residential community.

Reading Odyssey Process

- Readers will read a section of Darwin each month assigned by the moderator with reading questions
- Once a month the readers will get on the phone discuss the reading (and the reading questions assigned by the moderator)
- Each phone call is moderated, recorded and the .mp3 is made available to the readers who missed it
- The moderator is also available via e-mail during the month to answer questions - and members are encouraged to use the group e-mail listserv and blog to discuss the reading

First-time readers can register for free?

First-time readers for this group have the opportunity to register for free. 

Veterans pay $49 because they have already participated in one Reading Odyssey reading group and they want to help cover administrative costs. The Reading Odyssey is nonprofit organization that is currently in the process of registering for 501c(3) status but does not yet have that. In any case, payments for reading groups are not and will not be tax deductible (as they are fee for service).
